Leslye Headland, showrunner of the Disney+ series “The Acolyte,” has put to rest speculation that the mysterious planet featured in the show’s sixth episode was Ahch-To, the site of the first Jedi temple introduced in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy. Despite intentional visual similarities, Headland confirmed in a recent interview with Collider that the planet is a new addition to the “Star Wars” universe.
“It’s not Ahch-To,” Headland stated, explaining that while the terrain was deliberately designed to evoke a similar isolated, rocky, water-surrounded feeling, there’s a crucial difference. “The idea is that cortosis is mined on this planet, so I don’t think that’s the case with Ahch-To. Part of the reason this is his home base is that cortosis is a very rare metal.”
This revelation has sparked interest among “Star Wars” fans, with some speculating that the new planet could be the birthplace of the Sith Order, mirroring Ahch-To’s significance to the Jedi. Such a connection would align with “The Acolyte’s” themes of duality between the light and dark sides of the Force.
Headland’s penchant for incorporating elements from “Star Wars Legends” – the now non-canonical Expanded Universe – has led to further speculation. Some fans and analysts suggest the mystery planet could be Bal’demnic, a world from Legends known for its cortosis ore deposits and similar geography to what’s shown in “The Acolyte.”
In Legends lore, Bal’demnic gained galactic prominence after Sith Lords Darth Tenebrous and Darth Plagueis discovered its cortosis reserves. If “The Acolyte” is indeed introducing Bal’demnic to the new canon, it could pave the way for exploring more Sith history and potentially introducing new Sith characters.
Headland’s skill in reimagining elements from “Star Wars Legends” for the current canon has been praised. Her approach allows longtime fans to experience familiar concepts in new contexts while introducing these ideas to a new generation of “Star Wars” enthusiasts.
