Sarah Snook, an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress known for her role on the HBO series “Succession,” will make her Broadway debut this spring. She will star in an innovative stage adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” The British production, which has already received positive reviews in London, will open at a Shubert theater in Manhattan for a limited run starting in March.
In the demanding lead role, Snook will portray all 26 characters from the novel. Australian director Kip Williams first developed the adaptation for the Sydney Theater Company, where he works as artistic director. His unconventional staging blends live actors with video shown on on-stage cameras. This allows Snook to dynamically shift between portrayals of each character.
Both Snook and Williams expressed excitement about bringing the acclaimed production to audiences in New York. Snook said she felt “privileged” to perform the story in London, and is “thrilled” others can now see it. She called the show an “electrifying journey” exploring themes like virtue, corruption, and consequences. For Williams, the opportunity to debut on Broadway is “humbling” and he can’t wait for audiences to experience Wilde’s enduring tale in this innovative format.
In addition to Snook’s lead performance, acclaimed designers and major theatrical producers are involved. The creative team contributing their skills includes Set and Costume Design by Marg Horwell, Lighting Design by Nick Schlieper and Clemence Williams for Composition & Sound Design. Producers financing the complex stage production are Michael Cassel, Adam Kenwright, Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, Daryl Roth, Amanda Lipitz and Henry Tisch.
While specific performance dates are still to be announced, the limited engagement is expected to attract significant attention within the theater world. Combining a fresh take on a classic story with Snook’s star power and the show’s technical ambition, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” looks poised to be one of the most anticipated debuts of the upcoming season on Broadway.
