The director, David Ayer, has stopped using social media after receiving bad feedback for backing James Gunn’s new Superman movie. This event shows that there are still disagreements among DC fans.
Ayer, known for directing the 2016 movie Suicide Squad, told fans not to start a new “Ayer Cut” campaign when the Superman video came out. In response to reports about the “incredible” quality of Gunn’s project, he said, “I “cannot f***ing wait” to see the trailer and the movie.”
Ayer wrote on Twitter, “As a filmmaker, I want to support other filmmakers.” He told fans not to talk too much about his cut of Suicide Squad during the launch of the Superman video. But some fans didn’t like what he said, especially those who couldn’t wait for his original film version to come out.
For example, the successful effort that got Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut released in 2021 is similar to what’s happening here. Even though he won, Ayer said in January that he was giving up on his quest for a director’s cut of Suicide Squad.
In answer to the criticism, Ayer told a personal story about how he became interested in comics as a child. He talked about how Batman and Superman figures helped him get through hard times. “I had a terrible childhood as a child.” She wrote, “My best friends were comic books.” He said, “Superman’s optimism was an example of how to see the world without darkness.”
Ayer ended his speech by saying, “If supporting another filmmaker is so controversial, I’m just lost at this point.” He was angry about the negative response and said he was going to step away from the ongoing social media discussion for a while.
