Shelley Fabares, the actress whose decades-spanning career carried her from a teenage breakout on “The Donna Reed Show” to a chart-topping music career, three films opposite Elvis Presley, and an Emmy-nominated run on “Coach,” has died. She was 82.

Fabares died Saturday in Los Angeles surrounded by loved ones, her family announced in a statement. No cause of death was disclosed. She is survived by her husband of more than four decades, actor Mike Farrell, best known for his role on “MAS*H.” Her family described her as a source of love, strength and comfort whose generosity and grace left a lasting mark on everyone who knew her.

Born Michele Ann Marie Fabares in Santa Monica in 1944, she began performing as a toddler and landed her first television credit at age 10 on “The Loretta Young Show” in 1954. Her breakthrough came in 1958, when she was cast as Mary Stone, the teenage daughter on the ABC sitcom “The Donna Reed Show,” a role she held for five seasons and roughly 190 episodes. The part turned her into a national teen idol and led to a recording contract; her 1962 single “Johnny Angel” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold more than a million copies.

Fabares parlayed her fame into a run of beach movies and, later, three films alongside Elvis Presley: “Girl Happy” in 1965, “Spinout” in 1966 and “Clambake” in 1967. She continued working steadily through the 1970s and 1980s, appearing on shows including “The Twilight Zone,” “One Day at a Time,” “The Rockford Files” and “Murder, She Wrote.” In 1989, she landed the role that earned her two Emmy nominations, playing Christine Armstrong, love interest to Craig T. Nelson’s title character, on the long-running sitcom “Coach.”

Fabares was married briefly to music producer Lou Adler before marrying Farrell in 1984. Off-screen, she became a prominent advocate for Alzheimer’s research after watching her mother battle the disease. Reflecting on her early years on “The Donna Reed Show” in a 2024 interview, Fabares described her onscreen family, including Reed herself, as genuinely close, calling the show’s namesake star someone she idolized both on camera and off.
