Spike Lee’s stop on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has reignited hype for Highest 2 Lowest, the director’s neo-noir remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low. Rocky plays Yung Felony, an ambitious lyricist, opposite Washington’s record-label titan, Stackin Hits CEO Cyrus King, in a Manhattan ransom plot lifted from Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom. Rising talent Ice Spice makes her screen debut, with Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Michael Potts and Dean Winters rounding out the ensemble.
The project bowed out of competition at Cannes in May to an 89 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and early praise for Washington’s “clinical precision” and Rocky’s “magnetic risk-taking,” though some critics questioned whether Lee’s stylistic flourishes dilute the original’s class commentary. Lee, 68, noted this is his fifth collaboration with Washington and hinted it could be their last, framing the picture as a “full-circle” moment that began with Mo’ Better Blues in 1990.
