Jean Smart claimed Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Hacks” at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, delivering a wry acceptance that doubled as a health update and a plea for civility.
“If I was walking like John Wayne, it’s because I broke my knee this summer,” she joked, before thanking “our unbelievable crew,” co-star Hannah Einbinder, the showrunners and her family, and closing with, “Let’s be good to each other.”
The win is her fourth Lead Actress trophy for “Hacks” and the seventh Emmy of her career, extending an awards run that began with earlier victories for “Frasier” and “Samantha Who?”.
Smart, 74, prevailed over nominees Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), Kristen Bell (“Nobody Wants This”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Uzo Aduba (“The Residence”). The ceremony aired live from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.
Her series had a big night: Einbinder earned her first Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy after four consecutive nominations, underscoring the show’s continued strength four seasons in.
Smart’s remarks, brief and pointed, aligned with the telecast’s emphasis on keeping speeches tight while preserving room for personality. The actor’s age also added historical weight to the moment, reinforcing her late-career dominance of the category.
“Hacks,” which follows veteran comedian Deborah Vance and her writer-partner Ava, has been a consistent contender across major categories since its debut, with Smart’s turn repeatedly singled out for precision timing and textured character work. Sunday’s result maintains that trajectory and caps another strong showing for the series amid a competitive comedy field.
