Brad Ingelsby says he is open to a future crossover between his new HBO crime series Task and his 2021 hit Mare of Easttown, though there are no active plans. Speaking this week, the creator said he “loves the idea” of those worlds intersecting if the story warrants it, while stressing that Task was built to stand on its own. Actor Mark Ruffalo has separately suggested Task inhabits the same universe as Mare, a notion that has fueled speculation about a possible meeting between Ruffalo’s FBI lead and Kate Winslet’s Delco detective.
Task premiered on September 7, 2025, and follows Tom Brandis (Ruffalo), a former priest turned FBI agent leading a task force targeting violent robberies in and around Philadelphia. Tom Pelphrey co-stars as a sanitation worker drawn into heists against a biker gang. The seven-episode series airs Sundays on HBO and Max.
Ingelsby has previously described the challenges of mounting a second season of Mare, citing the desire for a worthy story and the complexities of returning to the character after the limited-series run. That caution helps explain his measured stance on any crossover: the creative bar remains high, and any link between the shows would need to arise organically rather than as a stunt.
Task returns to the same corner of Delaware County that grounded Mare, and the production again leans into local texture, including the area’s distinct dialect. Ruffalo said the cast trained intensively with a dialect coach to capture the sound of Delco speech, part of the show’s effort to embed its crime storyline in a lived-in community.
For now, the crossover question remains hypothetical. Ingelsby’s comments signal openness, Ruffalo’s remarks hint at shared continuity, and the shared geography invites fan theories, but the creator has emphasized that Task is designed to tell a complete story on its own terms.
