South Korea’s holiday box office crowned action comedy “Boss” the weekend leader after a strong launch that began Friday, Oct. 3, and extended through Saturday, keeping the film at No. 1 on daily charts. Ticket tallies from the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS system show 238,895 admissions on opening day and 208,863 on Saturday, giving the title an early head start during the extended Chuseok frame.
The film, directed by Ra Hee-chan and led by Jo Woo-jin and Jung Kyung-ho, follows rival gang lieutenants who keep “yielding” the top job for their own aims, a premise that pairs slapstick with set-piece action. “Boss” screened at the Busan International Film Festival in September before rolling out nationwide on 1,100-plus screens for the holiday corridor.
Competition came from Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice,” which had topped charts the prior weekend. Early-weekend KOBIS figures indicate “Boss” outpaced it in daily admissions and held the lead in advance-sales share, signaling strong word of mouth among multiplexgoers. By late Sunday tracking, local media placed its cumulative audience near 670,000.
Beyond the headline numbers, the release offers a timely jolt for local distributors after a volatile year for theatrical revenue. The Chuseok period traditionally lifts family-friendly and comic fare, and “Boss” was positioned squarely for that window with brisk running time and broad casting, including Park Ji-hwan and Lee Kyu-hyung. International sales are handled by Finecut, underscoring plans to extend the film’s run beyond the domestic market.
KOBIS daily and weekly tables will clarify the final four-day holiday haul, but the early admissions curve suggests “Boss” will finish the frame as the top title in Korea, with momentum to carry into the second week if weekday holds remain stable.
