Ethan Browne, the actor, model and musician who was the elder son of singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, has died at the age of 52. His death was announced in a statement shared on the musician’s social media accounts, which said that Ethan was found unresponsive at his home on the morning of November 25 and had “passed away,” and asked for privacy as the family grieves. Authorities have not released further details.
Reports citing local officials say the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has listed the cause of death as “deferred,” a designation used when further tests are required before a final determination is made. The family has indicated there will be no additional information for now, a stance that has been echoed in early coverage as friends, collaborators and fans offer condolences online.
Born in Los Angeles in November 1973, Ethan grew up around his father’s musical career and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone as an infant in his father’s arms. As an adult he worked across fashion, film and music, modelling for designers including Isaac Mizrahi and taking small roles in projects such as the films Hackers and Raising Helen and a 2002 episode of Birds of Prey. He later founded the independent label Spinside Records and recorded as part of the duo Alain Zane, whose album Right Before Your Eyes was released in 2022.
Ethan’s life was marked early by personal tragedy: his mother, actor and model Phyllis Major, died by suicide in 1976 when he was a toddler. Jackson Browne has spoken in interviews about becoming a single parent in the aftermath, describing fatherhood as a central focus alongside songwriting and saying he judged his own success in life by the relationships with his sons. In a 2022 conversation, he said watching Ethan work, perform and raise his own children made him feel he had done “something really right” as a parent.
Tributes following the announcement have remembered Ethan as quietly charismatic and creatively restless, pointing to his work in fashion campaigns, his brief but memorable screen appearances and his later turn toward music production and performance. Fans of his father have shared images of the 1970s magazine cover side by side with photographs from film premieres and club shows, reflecting on a life lived partly in public yet largely outside the spotlight that surrounded the Browne family for decades.
