Devil Wears Prada 2 Survives Mortal Kombat II Challenge, Crosses $433M Globally in Dominant Mother’s Day Weekend

The Devil Wears Prada 2 held off a fierce challenge from Mortal Kombat II to claim the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office for a second straight weekend, collecting $43 million from 4,200 theaters while the video game sequel debuted to $40 million — delivering one of the most competitive Mother’s Day weekends in Hollywood’s recent memory.

Disney’s fashion comedy retained the crown with a remarkably slim 44% second-weekend decline, pushing its North American total to $144.8 million and its global cumulative gross to $433.2 million in just 12 days of release — surpassing the entire lifetime worldwide haul of the 2006 original, which earned $326 million. The performance helped Disney become the first studio to cross $2 billion globally for the year.

Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat II landed in second place with a $40 million North American debut from 3,503 locations, generating $63 million worldwide after a softer-than-projected $23 million from 78 international markets. The sequel, budgeted at $80 million, drew a 75% male audience according to PostTrak data — nearly the mirror image of Prada 2’s female-dominant crowd — and earned a B CinemaScore, slightly below its predecessor’s B+. The first Mortal Kombat opened to just $23.3 million in 2021 while simultaneously available on HBO Max, making the sequel’s purely theatrical figure a genuine step forward. A third film is already in development at Warner Bros.

Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael claimed third place with $36.5 million in its third weekend, a striking 33% drop that pushed its North American total to $240.4 million — overtaking Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing musical biopic in domestic box office history. Its global tally reached $577 million.

Amazon MGM’s family mystery The Sheep Detectives, featuring an ensemble voice cast including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Patrick Stewart alongside Hugh Jackman in a live-action role, opened in fourth place with $15.9 million from 3,457 theaters and earned an A- CinemaScore. Paramount’s James Cameron co-directed Billie Eilish concert film Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) rounded out the top five with $7.5 million domestically and $12.6 million internationally.

The overall weekend landed 88% ahead of the same frame in 2025 and marked the second-highest post-pandemic Mother’s Day box office result on record. The 2026 domestic marketplace now tracks 16% above last year’s pace, according to Comscore. Analyst Shawn Robbins of Fandango called out the long-term strength of Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary — which earned $6.6 million and $6 million respectively in their sixth and eighth weekends — as proof of “the vital importance of holdover strength.”
