Kieran Culkin Takes the Mic as Caesar Flickerman in Hunger Games Prequel

An Oscar-winning successor to Stanley Tucci brings magnetism and unpredictability to Panem’s most flamboyant host.

Hollywood actor Kieran Culkin has been officially tapped to portray Caesar Flickerman in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate announced on May 21, 2025. The film, directed by Francis Lawrence with a screenplay by Billy Ray, is based on Suzanne Collins’s 2025 novel and is slated for theatrical release on November 20, 2026. Culkin will succeed Stanley Tucci, who made the character memorable in the original franchise’s first four installments.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman praised Culkin’s “scene-stealing presence and undeniable charm,” asserting that he is “perfect for Caesar Flickerman, the sickeningly watchable host of Panem’s darkest spectacle”. Franchise producer Nina Jacobson added that “Kieran’s magnetism, wit and unpredictability make him a perfect fit for Caesar Flickerman. A host like Caesar transforms brutality into entertainment, and an actor as layered as Kieran makes sure we don’t look away”.

Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s first Games and centers on the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell, following young Haymitch Abernathy’s rise to victory. The ensemble cast includes Joseph Zada as Haymitch, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Elle Fanning as a young Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, and McKenna Grace, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor and Ben Wang in supporting roles.

Some fans have voiced reservations on social platforms, noting that Culkin often portrays variations of the same persona and questioning whether he can match Stanley Tucci’s flamboyant energy. Others counter that his recent Oscar-winning performance in A Real Pain and Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning turn on Succession demonstrate his range and ability to balance charisma with depth.

Caesar Flickerman, the Capitol’s master of ceremonies since the 50th Hunger Games, is renowned for his colorful hair, tailored suits and ability to coax personal confessions from tributes on live television. Culkin’s casting thus represents both a tribute to the character’s legacy and a fresh interpretation aimed at reinvigorating one of the franchise’s most iconic figures.
