Sarsgaard Brings Neuromancer Buzz and Bride Secrets to Karlovy Vary

Fresh from a Karlovy Vary award, the actor outlines his Apple TV+ cyber-punk series and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s punk-rock Frankenstein film while reflecting on artistic integrity.

Peter Sarsgaard arrived at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival with two forthcoming genre projects in tow—and a pledge to “seek the truth” every time he steps on set. During a KVIFF Talk he confirmed his role in Apple TV+’s adaptation of William Gibson’s cyber-punk milestone Neuromancer and called Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein off-shoot The Bride! “provocative, sexy, dangerous and punk.”

Apple posted a “Welcome to the Chatsubo” video on YouTube, TikTok and Facebook last week, announcing that the ten-episode series—steered by showrunner Graham Roland and pilot director JD Dillard—has entered production. Sarsgaard plays patriarch John Ashpool opposite Callum Turner’s hacker Case and Briana Middleton’s mirror-eyed assassin Molly. Polygon noted that Apple’s order ends four decades of failed film attempts to bring the 1984 novel to screen.

Spain’s Cinco Días reports the streamer is banking on Neuromancer to reinforce its science-fiction slate following Foundation and Silo. Critics caution that Gibson’s imagery has been mined by works such as The Matrix, making originality the show’s toughest test.

While cyberspace unfolds, Sarsgaard is already stitched into The Bride! Warner Bros. dated Gyllenhaal’s take on Bride of Frankenstein for 26 September 2025 after reclaiming the $80 million production from Netflix. Christian Bale headlines with Jessie Buckley, Penélope Cruz and Sarsgaard, and CinemaCon footage teased a punk-rock aesthetic underscored by Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score.

At Karlovy Vary the festival honored Sarsgaard with its President’s Award; he used the moment to argue against labelling characters as purely good or evil and urged filmmakers to pursue honesty over caricature. He then quipped, “You can tell I didn’t vote for Trump,” before steering the conversation back to craft.
