Animated Cameo Lets Gunn and Snyder Trade Superman Barbs on Rick and Morty

Directors lend their voices to a July 6 Rick and Morty episode, roasting each other’s Superman philosophies as Gunn’s big-screen reboot nears release.

Adult Swim treated fans to an unexpected director-versus-director showdown when “Ricker Than Fiction” aired on July 6, bringing James Gunn and Zack Snyder into Rick and Morty’s multiverse as outspoken cartoon versions of themselves.

The pair meet in a Warner Bros. cafeteria where Snyder ribs his counterpart: “He’s the Man of Steel, not the Man of Conversation—do more shots of him punching!” Gunn fires back, only to be dazzled by Snyder’s hyper-muscled frame before the exchange derails into slow-motion jokes that mirror their real-world filmmaking habits.

Their cameo anchors a plot that sees Rick deploy a “Movie-lizer” device to rewrite the fictional blockbuster series Maximum Velocitree after blaming Gunn for diluting it, an inside gag aimed at corporate franchise tinkering.

Executive producer Scott Marder says both directors were “good sports” and accepted every punch line without notes. Marder adds that writer Rob Schrab locked Gunn the morning after the filmmaker wrapped principal photography on Superman, with Snyder recording in the same session.

Gunn’s live-action Superman, starring David Corenswet and set for release on July 11, aims to restore hope and warmth to the character after a decade of darker interpretations. Snyder, who launched the modern DC cycle with 2013’s Man of Steel and now oversees Netflix’s Rebel Moon universe, relished the chance to lampoon his reputation for brooding heroes and kinetic brawls.

Clips of the animated argument trended across social platforms within hours, fuelling fresh debate over which vision of Krypton’s last son will best connect with audiences when Gunn’s film lands next week. For Rick and Morty, the stunt delivers another layer of meta-satire in a season already praised for tackling studio politics while maintaining its dimension-hopping chaos; three episodes remain before the eighth-season finale on July 27.
