Michael B. Jordan Scores First Golden Globe Nod for Sinners

Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance and Ryan Coogler’s blues-soaked vampire drama earn seven Golden Globe nominations, extending Sinners’ fast-rising awards-season streak.

Michael B. Jordan has secured his first Golden Globe nomination for his dual performance in Ryan Coogler’s vampire drama Sinners, as the film lands seven nods and cements itself as one of this awards season’s key contenders. The movie is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, with Jordan in the running for Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and Coogler recognized for directing and writing, alongside nominations for score and original song.

In a statement after the nominations were announced, Jordan called the recognition “humbling” and described Sinners as the toughest and most rewarding work of his career. He highlighted the challenge of embodying twins Smoke and Stack, two men shaped by the same history but carrying their pain in different ways, and credited Coogler’s “fearless” approach for pushing him to new creative ground. Jordan framed the film as a story about love, loss and the cost of freedom, and said the nomination honors the legacy of the communities the movie draws from.

Coogler, in his own reaction, stressed that Sinners grew out of family ties and a long-standing obsession with the blues. He thanked producers Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, composer Ludwig Göransson, songwriter Raphael Saadiq and Jordan, calling the production a “family affair” shaped by an ensemble of specialists in front of and behind the camera. The director has described the film as rooted in memories of his Mississippi-born grandfather and an uncle who loved blues records, whiskey and baseball, and has linked that personal history to his decision to negotiate an unusually powerful deal on the film.

For Sinners, Coogler secured first-dollar gross participation, final cut and eventual ownership of the movie after 25 years, a rarity for a studio genre release. He has said that retaining long-term control mirrors the film’s focus on Black ownership and legacy in the Jim Crow South, turning a standard studio contract into a statement about who gets to profit from stories drawn from that past. Industry analysts see the pact as a key moment in Coogler’s career and a signal of Warner Bros.’ confidence in the project.

Set in early-1930s Mississippi, Sinners follows twin brothers who return home from war hoping to open a blues club for Black patrons, only to confront supernatural predators and the violence baked into segregation-era life. The film mixes period drama, horror and music steeped in Delta blues, with Jordan’s mirrored performances stitched together through extensive practical effects work. The movie has already collected an ensemble tribute at the Gotham Awards and leads this season’s Critics Choice Awards with a field-topping 17 nominations, signaling that the Golden Globes haul fits into a much larger awards run.

With Sinners just behind One Battle After Another and Sentimental Value in the nomination tally, and both Coogler and Jordan riding a decade-long partnership that stretches back to Fruitvale Station and Creed, the Globes recognition reinforces the pair’s status as one of contemporary cinema’s defining director–actor teams and puts a genre film squarely in the center of this year’s prestige conversation.
