Netflix has finalized the cast for “The Sticks,” a hockey drama set in a small Minnesota town, adding Scott Bakula, Logan Marshall-Green and Alex MacIsaac as series regulars alongside seven newly named recurring players. The streamer paired the announcement with first-look photos from the set, giving fans an early glimpse of the eight-episode series ahead of its 2027 premiere.
The show centers on a widow, played by Michelle Monaghan, who takes over coaching the youth hockey team her late husband built, guiding a roster of grieving young athletes through a season shaped by loss and rivalry. Creator Nick Naveda described the show’s scope as extending well past the rink. “The Sticks is about a lot of things: hockey, family, love, loss, class, and coming of all ages,” he told Netflix’s Tudum. “But above all, it’s a story about community and the importance of taking care of one another.”
Bakula, returning to series television for the first time since his run on “NCIS: New Orleans” ended in 2024, plays Coach Brody Hansen. Marshall-Green, who continues shooting the second season of CBS’s “Marshals,” takes on Coach Sully. MacIsaac, previously seen in “When Calls the Heart” and set for a guest role in Netflix’s upcoming “Hollywood Arts,” plays Emma Boone. The newly announced recurring cast includes Bryan Greenberg as Cliff Barnes, Chelsea Field as Alice Hansen and Patrick Gallagher as Principal Montgomery.
Bridget Bedard, previously showrunner on “Ramy” and co-showrunner on “Love Life,” serves as showrunner and executive producer. Naveda executive produces alongside Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Robert Atwood for 21 Laps Entertainment. Trey Edward Shults directs and executive produces the season’s first two episodes. The series was previously known internally as the “Untitled Hockey Project” before Netflix locked in its title this week, joining a growing lineup of hockey-centered dramas that includes HBO Max’s “Heated Rivalry” and Prime Video’s “Off Campus.”
