“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is chasing a milestone no film has ever reached: a $1 billion domestic box office haul. After a record-breaking opening weekend of $360 million and a second-weekend hold of $145 million, the Sony and Marvel release has already pulled in more than $655 million in North America and $1.67 billion worldwide, putting it on pace for territory no previous release has touched.
No movie has crossed $1 billion domestically to date. The closest any film has come is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which finished its run at $936 million domestic against $2.07 billion worldwide. “Avengers: Endgame,” still the fastest film to hit $1 billion globally before “Brand New Day” arrived, topped out at $858 million domestic on its way to $2.8 billion worldwide.
Analysts view “Endgame” as the most useful comparison, since both films posted similar second-weekend drops. Using that comparison alone would suggest “Brand New Day” falls short of the billion-dollar domestic mark. But “Endgame” opened in April and competed against a full summer slate that included another Spider-Man film, 2019’s “Far From Home.” “Brand New Day” faces a lighter release calendar, without a comparable superhero rival in its path, even as August traditionally cools off at the box office and families shift attention to the start of the school year.
The math hinges on the film’s eventual multiple, the ratio between its opening weekend and its final domestic total. “Endgame” finished with a 2.4 multiple. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” reached 3.1, a rate that, if repeated here, would push “Brand New Day” to roughly $1.1 billion domestically. Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman pointed to the film’s global reach as a driver of its momentum, telling Deadline that its themes of friendship resonate broadly regardless of where audiences are watching. The film crossed $1 billion worldwide in six days, the second-fastest pace ever behind only “Endgame,” and remains on track to reach $2 billion globally, a level only seven other films in history have achieved.
