News of Hayden Panettiere’s death has sent fans back to “Ice Princess,” the 2005 Disney film that paired her with Michelle Trachtenberg nearly two decades ago. Clips of the two actresses have circulated widely on social media since Sunday, carrying extra weight because Trachtenberg died last year at age 39. Panettiere played figure skater Gen Harwood opposite Trachtenberg’s Casey Carlyle, a rivalry-turned-friendship storyline that many viewers say shaped their childhoods.
One widely shared TikTok video showing Panettiere applying makeup to Trachtenberg’s character drew nearly 300 comments within hours, many from users processing the loss of both stars in close succession. Commenters described feeling the film had lost its emotional anchor, with several imagining the two reunited. Kim Cattrall, who played Gen’s mother in the movie, posted her own tribute on Instagram, writing that she was heartbroken to lose Panettiere so soon.
Beyond “Ice Princess,” fans have also revived memories of Panettiere’s other signature roles, particularly her turn as Kirby Reed in the “Scream” franchise. Clips highlighting her performance in 2011’s “Scream 4” and her return in “Scream VI” have spread alongside tributes from the “Heroes” and “Nashville” fan communities that followed her career for two decades.
Panettiere was found unresponsive Sunday at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, and pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts from paramedics. Some reports have described her death as an apparent overdose, though the Greenville Police Department has said the case remains under active investigation and has not confirmed a cause. Officials have said nothing so far points to foul play. Panettiere, who would have turned 37 this week, is survived by her daughter.
Trachtenberg’s death in February 2025 was ultimately ruled natural, caused by complications from diabetes, according to the New York City medical examiner’s office. The proximity of the two losses has amplified grief among longtime fans of the film, many of whom say it will carry new meaning each time they revisit it.
