Bear Grylls Is Running Wild Review: The Wilderness Has Become a Talk Show

Fox has given Bear Grylls Is Running Wild a fresh home and a slightly altered title, yet the machinery underneath remains almost perfectly preserved. Bear Grylls takes a celebrity into remote terrain, asks them to climb, rappel, swim, eat something unpleasant, and then talk about themselves once exhaustion has loosened the usual promotional defenses. The format has existed in various forms since 2014, and its durability now creates its largest problem. Viewers know the rhythm too well.

The premiere places Matthew McConaughey on Norway’s Folgefonna Glacier, where a dogsled introduction gives way to hiking through summer greenery, steep rock faces, freezing water, and an overnight camp. McConaughey has apparently wanted this experience for two decades and approaches it with the serene confidence expected from a man who has spent years turning his public persona into a minor philosophy. That confidence gives the episode charm. It also reveals how thoroughly the show has changed from wilderness survival into celebrity portraiture with ropes attached.

All Right in Norway

McConaughey is an unusually compatible guest because embarrassment rarely appears to trouble him. He climbs a rock face despite having little experience, rappels down another, strips to boxer briefs for a swim into glacial water, and calmly eats reindeer testicles beside Grylls at camp. Few of these moments destabilize him for long. His familiar “all right, all right, all right” attitude is practically a survival tool.

The episode occasionally tries to manufacture jeopardy through perspective. A body-camera shot during his first rappel briefly suggests a fall before revealing a minor slip. The harness remains visible, the safety systems are understood, and the moment evaporates almost immediately. The spectacle depends on pretending danger has arrived while simultaneously making sure everyone understands that it has been professionally contained.

McConaughey proves far more interesting once the physical challenges stop. Sitting outside with Grylls, he recounts meeting the producer who encouraged him to audition for Dazed and Confused and advised him against immediately finding an agent, reasoning that appearing too eager could weaken his position. It is probably a story McConaughey could tell beneath studio lights with equal fluency, yet the Norwegian landscape gives it a different texture.

His stories about Woody Harrelson are even better, particularly the absurd memory of Harrelson sleeping between McConaughey and his new wife. This is where the program still earns its access. McConaughey talks constantly, sometimes enough to make the mountains feel like supporting actors, yet his conversational ease fits a format built around lowering celebrity defenses.

Danger by Appointment

The surviving illusion is that Grylls and his guests have been thrown into situations demanding serious improvisation. The production keeps puncturing that illusion. Climbing routes arrive with harnesses and redundancies. Necessary equipment has usually been positioned beforehand.

Food discoveries can feel suspiciously convenient. Cold-water sequences recur with such dependable regularity that the water starts functioning like a contractual obligation. In McConaughey’s episode, a bag containing a signal flare winds up in a glacial lake so both men have an excuse to swim after it.

Later guests expose the same pattern. Tiffany Haddish brings a livelier presence, yet her episode reportedly skips the overnight component that once helped sell the survival premise. MGK gets further rope work, a freezing-water jump after a boat sits offshore, a water bug to eat, and a dead animal that provides another grisly tasting opportunity. Each episode changes the celebrity and geography while recycling much of the same dramatic vocabulary.

There is something revealing about that transformation. Reality television once sold the fantasy that celebrity status could be temporarily stripped away through discomfort. Here, discomfort itself has become part of celebrity management. The wilderness is controlled, the risks are calibrated, the grotesque meal arrives on schedule, and everyone gets home safely after delivering a few vulnerable anecdotes.

Grylls remains capable, patient, and comfortable guiding people through these challenges. The weariness belongs less to him than to a format whose tricks have become too visible.

Where the Format Still Lives

The program becomes substantially better whenever it stops insisting that anyone might genuinely be stranded. Its most effective structure pairs daytime exertion with nighttime conversation. After hours of climbing, walking, cold, and hunger, a celebrity sits beside Grylls without the machinery of a conventional talk-show appearance surrounding them. The conversations can still feel looser because the setting changes the social rules. A studio interview asks for polished recollection. A campfire after a glacier swim permits rambling.

That distinction explains why McConaughey’s career story lands better than several of the episode’s planned dangers. His discussion of Dazed and Confused contains little suspense, yet it reveals how chance, self-belief, and careful image-making helped shape his early career. His Harrelson stories offer something similar through friendship rather than professional mythology.

The landscape helps too. Folgefonna’s mixture of ice, exposed rock, green summer ground, and cold water gives the premiere visual scale that studio-based celebrity programming cannot imitate. For younger family viewers, the physical challenges also provide straightforward lessons about fear, persistence, and accepting discomfort, though bleeped profanity, sexual humor, gross-out eating, and tense climbing footage may push some material outside the safest family-TV lane.

The curious achievement of Bear Grylls Is Running Wild is that its weakest element now occupies its title. Very little here feels truly wild. The better material arrives once the ropes are secured, the cameras stop selling peril, and two people finally sit down to talk.

Bear Grylls Is Running Wild premiered on Fox on April 21, 2026. The reality survival series features the renowned adventurer guiding prominent public figures through demanding environments across the globe.

The Review

Bear Grylls Is Running Wild

6 Score

Bear Grylls Is Running Wild survives by quietly admitting that survival is no longer its real attraction. The harnesses, planted meals, calculated cold-water plunges, and repeated rope work expose a format whose danger has become largely ceremonial. What remains valuable is the intimacy produced after the spectacle, particularly when Matthew McConaughey turns Norway’s wilderness into an unusually relaxed space for stories about Dazed and Confused and Woody Harrelson. The celebrity machine has swallowed much of the adventure, yet the conversations still occasionally escape it.

PROS

  • Relaxed celebrity conversations
  • McConaughey’s natural charisma
  • Beautiful Norwegian locations
  • Accessible resilience themes

CONS

  • Heavily managed danger
  • Repetitive survival challenges
  • Manufactured food encounters
  • Adventure often feels secondary
