Amanda Seyfried Stands by Rejecting Gamora Role: “Obviously I Was Wrong”

The Oscar nominee admits she misjudged the Marvel hit but says family, a dislike of makeup chairs and a fear of stunts shaped her choice.

Amanda Seyfried still stands by her decision to turn down Gamora in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” 12 years after Zoe Saldaña made the green-skinned assassin one of Marvel’s signature heroes. At a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Q&A, the Oscar-nominated actress called the role a poor fit and said she passed with the family she wanted to build in mind, Deadline reported Sunday.

Seyfried said she judged the film a likely flop. She cited a talking tree and raccoon, a setting in space and the risk that a failure would damage her career. She concedes the misjudgment, saying “obviously I was wrong,” but will not retract the choice. Practical objections weighed too. She dislikes long hours in the makeup trailer, struggles to sit still, avoids stunts and heights, and prefers parts that give her something concrete to hold on to.

The comments add detail to earlier explanations. On a 2020 awards podcast, she said she did not want to join “the first Marvel movie that bombed.” In a March 2025 podcast appearance, she described a reluctance to live in London for six months a year and a rival offer: Seth MacFarlane’s western comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West.”

Her caution had logic in 2013, when the offer arrived. Marvel’s earlier hits rested on household names such as Iron Man and Captain America. The Guardians were obscure to general audiences, and studio president Kevin Feige had himself described the property that way at San Diego Comic-Con in 2010.

The outcome proved her wrong. The 2014 film became one of its year’s biggest earners, and the three Guardians movies have grossed over $2 billion worldwide. Saldaña, now an Oscar winner, played Gamora in all three, plus “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

Online reaction has leaned toward the casting that happened, with many fans saying they cannot picture anyone else in the part. Others credit Seyfried for owning her miscalculation without second-guessing herself. Her career has moved in other directions. Seyfried starred in “Mamma Mia!” and “Les Misérables,” won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for playing Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout,” and earned her Oscar nomination for David Fincher’s “Mank.”
