Star Wars Jedi video game protagonist Cal Kestis could make the leap to live-action, but only if the role makes narrative sense, says actor Cameron Monaghan. At a recent fan convention, Monaghan expressed openness to portraying Cal in a film or TV project under the right circumstances.
Monaghan has voiced the Jedi fugitive Cal Kestis in 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its 2023 sequel Jedi: Survivor. With Cal becoming a fan favorite character, many have speculated on when he could enter official Star Wars canon in live-action form.
While not ruling it out, Monaghan stipulated that any such portrayal must avoid hollow fan service. As he told attendees, Cal’s inclusion would need to “continue the story or character in some way.” Monaghan wants the character to “mean something” with true narrative purpose, rather than “just show up to stand around.”
This caveat makes sense given mixed reactions to legacy character cameos in Disney+ series like The Book of Boba Fett. While fans cherish Cal Kestis, simply shoehorning him into an existing storyline risks rings hollow. Any live-action debut would require thoughtful integration servicing Cal’s arc.
Monaghan seems to grasp this balance. At 29, he’s nearing the end of his window to convincingly portray the young Jedi in a storyline overlapping the games. While animation cameos remain possible, Cal’s next chapter likely awaits a project set after Jedi: Survivor, which Monaghan says is now in early development.
