In an epic clash of behemoth proportions, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” thundered into theaters this weekend, pulverizing box office records with a monstrous $194 million global debut. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures monsterverse mashup secured the second-highest domestic opening of the year at $80 million, trailing only the studios’ sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two.”
Directed by Adam Wingard, who helmed 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the jam-packed actioner pits the iconic Titans against a terrifying new threat – the nefarious Skar King. Familiar faces Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, and Brian Tyree Henry reprise their roles, joined by newcomers Dan Stevens and Alex Ferns on a desperate quest to save humanity.
Critics were divided, with some like The Times’ Katie Walsh finding the film’s “harried energy” eventually “tiresome and deafening.” However, audiences roared their approval, awarding the movie an A- CinemaScore grade and a 92% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.
The spectacularly rendered showdowns impressed, with outlets like IGN praising Wingard’s “adept” handling of the “over-the-top monster action.” Empire commended the seamless Weta visual effects, noting the “beautifully rendered power-struggle” delivered an undeniably fun thrill ride, proclaiming “it’s hard not to watch it without a grin on your face.”
Premium formats like IMAX were a driving force, comprising 48% of domestic sales as moviegoers flocked to experience the titanic throwdowns on the biggest screens. Internationally, the film stomped out $114 million across 63 markets.
“The New Empire” now stands as the third highest-grossing film of 2024 and marks the MonsterVerse’s second-best domestic opening behind 2014’s “Godzilla” ($93M). As this prodigious debut demonstrates, when studio synergy and audience appetite unite, the box office reign of the Titans is virtually unstoppable.
