Rebellion Developments has pulled back the curtain on Atomfall, one of the most delightfully bizarre games revealed in recent memory. This original survival action game transports players to a fictionalized British quarantine zone in the early 1960s for a mind-bending adventure inspired by classic weird fiction.
Set five years after a reimagined version of the real-life 1957 Windscale nuclear accident, Atomfall takes place in the rolling British countryside that has been overrun by mystical cults, murderous robots, and potentially undead threats. Players will need to scavenge for resources to survive while investigating the dark mystery behind this seemingly idyllic setting turned horror show.
“In Atomfall, we wanted to take the picturesque British countryside and flip it on its head,” said Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley. “So this classic picture postcard setting now serves as an eerie backdrop for a dark mystery players will unravel themselves.”
Atomfall blends a unique array of influences from post-war Britain, Cold War paranoia, folk horror, and iconic British sci-fi like Doctor Who and The Quatermass Experiment. Kingsley cited these speculative fiction stories as major inspirations that will heavily shape the game’s unsettling tone and storyline.
While light on gameplay details, the reveal trailer showcased the title’s striking visuals contrasting the serene pastoral landscapes with ominous deserted towns, killer robots, and cultish villagers. According to Rebellion, Atomfall will incorporate single-player story elements and open-world survival gameplay in ambitious new ways for the studio.
“The quarantine zone has been cut off, so you’re dealing with people left to their own devices where things have gone ‘Lord of the Flies,'” said Associate Head of Design Ben Fisher. “Navigate bizarre characters, mysticism, cults, murky government agencies. Investigate clues, scavenge to survive, and remember every encounter is life or death.”
Atomfall is slated to launch in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox One/PS4 with availability on Xbox Game Pass. This wildly imaginative blend of post-apocalyptic survival, British folk horror, and classic sci-fi looks poised to be one of next year’s most unique gaming experiences.
