Disney showcased a wide array of new movies, shows, and theme park attractions at its biennial D23 Expo in Anaheim, California this weekend. Over 12,000 enthusiastic fans packed the convention center to get a first look at projects spanning Disney’s brands.
Perhaps the biggest reveal came from director James Cameron, who announced the title of the next Avatar film as “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Set for release in December 2025, it continues the story of the blockbuster first two Avatar movies. Cameron shared the new film will explore other cultures on Pandora and introduce an important new character.
Star Wars fans got a surprise with the announcement of a new theatrical movie titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Director Jon Favreau debuted early footage from the film, which just began shooting. It’s set to hit theaters in May 2026.
Disney Animation also has more “Frozen” on the way with a third movie slated for November 2027. Pete Docter of Pixar provided looks at upcoming titles like “Hoppers” about an undercover robot beaver and confirmed “Incredibles 3” is in development. Docter also announced a four-part “Inside Out” series called “Dream Productions” for Disney+.
In live-action news, Jeff Bridges and Jared Leto will star in “Tron: Ares.” A fresh trailer debuted for “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Dwayne Johnson previewed “Moana 2” and a monster truck movie.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige outlined films such as the “WandaVision” spin-off “Agatha All Along” and the new “Fantastic Four” movie now shooting in the UK.
Disney is also broadening its entertainment through adaptations like “The Greatest Showman” heading to Broadway and a filmed version of the “Frozen” musical planned for Disney+ in 2025.
With projects spanning the next decade across movies, shows and theme parks, Disney is ensuring its brands and franchises stay relevant for generations of fans.
