Hollywood star Johnny Depp is making his return to directing with a new historical drama focused on famous Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Titled “Modi – Three Days on the Wings of Madness,” the film will have its world premiere this week at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. Depp last directed decades ago and is excited to share this creative project chronicling a pivotal time in Modigliani’s life.

The movie tells the story of Modigliani over three chaotic days in 1916 Paris as World War I was raging. As bombing strikes escalated in the city, the struggling bohemian artist tried to escape while also dealing with his art community, muse, and a potential American patron. Al Pacino, who became involved in bringing the original play to cinema, stars alongside Riccardo Scamarcio as Modigliani. The cast also includes Stephen Graham, Antonia Desplat, Bruno Gouery, and Luisa Ranieri.

Known for his groundbreaking post-Impressionist portraits and nude paintings, Modigliani created during a transformative period for art. Depp was drawn to exploring this artist’s fascinating vision during significant historical change through cinema. Having not directed in nearly 30 years, the actor-filmmaker feels Modigliani represents an era of new opportunities. Producers believe Depp’s sensitivities as an artist himself make him ideal to fully capture Modigliani’s spirit.

Following legal issues, Depp has found new support in European film circles. He previously opened the Cannes Film Festival and will soon receive a lifetime achievement award from the Rome Film Festival, where “Modi” will screen after its premiere. Producers describe avoiding a strict biopic format in favor of conveying Modigliani’s world, with Depp hoping audiences connect to the movie’s depiction of its subject and time. All eyes will be on San Sebastian for Depp’s highly anticipated return to directing.
