Glasgow, Scotland – Janey Godley, an acclaimed Scottish comedian and social media star, has died at the age of 63 following a two-year battle with ovarian cancer. Known for her viral political satire videos during the COVID-19 pandemic, Godley passed away peacefully at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow with family by her side.
Godley gained widespread popularity for her comedic dubbing of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s coronavirus briefings. Her videos brought much-needed humor to Scotland during challenging times. However, her influence extended far beyond these popular performances through a decades-long career in stand-up comedy and political activism.
The comedian first drew international attention in 2016 by protesting then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at his Turnberry golf resort. Even in her final weeks, Godley showed her characteristic wit and political edge by posting an image of herself wearing a t-shirt with a message directed at Trump.
In November 2021, Godley disclosed her ovarian cancer diagnosis, forcing her to cancel her touring show. She openly shared her health journey on social media, noting in September 2023 that chemotherapy was no longer effectively treating her cancer.
Just days before her death, Godley received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow for her significant contributions to Scottish culture and comedy. A photo captured her smiling with her degree from her hospice bed.
Godley’s family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she received throughout her battle with cancer. They stated the love and encouragement from fans brought her great joy in her final days. The family requested privacy as they mourn the loss of the beloved comedienne, saying she would have wanted to be remembered with laughter.
