At a time of huge popularity of first-person shooters such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Apex Legends and Overwatch, one would think that development studios aren’t going to surprise genre enthusiasts all that much. However, the Embark Studios team has taken up the challenge and introduced The Finals.
Embark Studios developers are focusing on at least two free-to-play projects at the moment – ARC Raiders, which is a co-op-based battle against murderous robots, has been delayed, however, for a rather interesting proposition.
The Finals is a free-to-play online shooter that is described in promotional videos as “the largest free-to-play battle show in the world,” where participants face off in arenas inspired by real places. There will be 4 teams of 3 players each competing.
As you will see in the following video showing gameplay snippets of the early version, the shooter is distinguished by an extensive environmental destruction system.
The studio’s chief creative director and co-founder Rob Runesson is extremely proud of the developed technology, which in his opinion will bring a breath of fresh air to the development process of games belonging to the genre.
In any case, the developers are betting on considerable gameplay intuitiveness and freedom – not only will we use a variety of weapons, but also we will be able to start fires, destroy buildings, use additional equipment (like a hook, which will help in fast movement around the map).
You will be able to check out The Finals soon – from September 29 to October 3, the first game tests will be hosted to help the team develop the game “together with the community,” with sign-ups available on the production subpage on Steam.
As of yet we have not found out the exact release date of the shooter, but the debut is expected in 2023 and the game will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
