The breakout success of Arrowhead Studios’ Helldivers 2 has come with some growing pains. The top-down sci-fi shooter set new concurrent player records on Steam this weekend, surpassing even gaming juggernauts like Grand Theft Auto V. However, the game’s runaway popularity has stressed backend servers and forced the developers to implement temporary restrictions.
On Sunday, Helldivers 2 hit a peak of over 409,000 simultaneous players on Steam. This trounced the previous record among PlayStation-published titles and positioned Helldivers 2 above longstanding Steam hits like GTA V, Rust, and Destiny 2 in all-time concurrent users.
Clearly, Helldivers 2 has struck a chord with PC gamers since its launch last week. However, developer Arrowhead has struggled to scale up capacity to meet demand. In a Discord update, the studio acknowledged working “around the clock” to reinforce servers but said it was “still struggling to keep up.”
To ease server loads, Arrowhead introduced a cap of around 450,000 maximum concurrent players. The company stressed this limit was temporary and that it was working closely with Sony to continue increasing capacity as rapidly as possible.
For a relatively modest PlayStation console title, the frenzied popularity of Helldivers 2 on PC took Arrowhead by surprise. The game’s clever combination of teamwork, gritty sci-fi action and approachable fun has proven an irresistible attraction for PC audiences.
