As Doctor Who’s latest season careens towards its explosive two-part finale, fans of the long-running sci-fi series are bracing for major disruptions to the show’s canon and central mythology. Recent episodes have been dropping tantalizing hints about surprise additions to the Doctor’s sprawling life story – revelations that could rewrite over 60 years of established lore.

The biggest bombshell stems from episode 6, “Rogue”, in which a hologram briefly depicted an unknown, alternate incarnation of the iconic Time Lord seemingly played by acclaimed actor Richard E. Grant. This has fueled rampant speculation that Grant may in fact be portraying his animated “Shalka Doctor” from 2003 in live-action.

“If this theory pans out, it would essentially double the number of legitimate Doctors in the Whoniverse,” posits blogger Alex Kingston. “You’d have two separate but equally valid Ninth Doctors with their own divergent narratives and tomorrows.”

Making this potential revelation even more seismic is how it connects to last year’s head-spinning “bi-generation” twist. The 60th anniversary special revealed that the Doctor doesn’t simply regenerate into a new body after expending their final life, but instead generates an entirely new, parallel existence while their former selves live on.

“Russell T. Davies confirmed every prior Doctor also went through this bi-generation at the same time,” explains fan Patrick Sawyer. “So in theory, there could now be infinite alternative Doctors scattered throughout the multiverse who took radically different paths.”

Showrunner Russell T. Davies has kept mum about what specific impact bi-generation will have on the Doctor Who canon moving forward. However, many believe the Richard E. Grant cameo is the first major indicator of just how reality-rewriting the consequences may ultimately be.

“This opens up endless reinventions and alternate timelines,” marvels blogger Lyndsay Lowe. “The series could revisit familiar incarnations like the Fourth or Ninth Doctor, but make them completely unlike how we remember for a fresh take.”

For viewers hoping to be among the first to learn the magnitude of these paradigm-shifting revelations, there’s good news – but only if you live in the UK. The season 14 finale episodes “The Legend of Ruby Sunday” and “Empire of Death” will be receiving special theatrical screenings at select cinemas across Britain in a two-part marathon event beginning June 15th.

“There’s no better way to experience a game-changing finale than on the big screen,” says critic Raj Patel. “UK fans get to be part of Doctor Who history unfolding in real time through these must-see theatrical exhibitions.”

For everyone else, the two-part finale will drop on Disney+ on June 14th and 21st respectively as per usual. But whether catching the grand unveiling at home or in theaters, all eyes will be fixed on discovering just how substantially Doctor Who’s new wave of showrunners plan to revise over six decades of canon – and what lies ahead for the seemingly infinite Doctors.
