Have you been watching the new show “Lady in the Lake” on Apple TV+? It’s got me totally hooked with its super interesting story set in 1960s Baltimore. The show is based on a book by Laura Lippman, and it blends made-up characters with real events that happened back then.
Two murders in 1969 actually inspired parts of the story. One was about an 11-year old white girl named Esther who went missing – that whole case shocked the city. The other was a young black mom named Shirley who was found dead in a lake, and people called her “The Lady in the Lake.”
While the show uses those real crimes, it changes up some of the details to create its own plot. One fictional character named Tessie represents Esther, and another girl named Cleo is inspired by Shirley. The show explores how the media and people react differently to crimes against white and black victims. It also looks at what life was like for women in the 60s and the tensions around race in Baltimore at that time.
The main people the show focuses on are Maddie, a housewife trying to become a journalist, and Cleo, a working mom dealing with complicated issues in her community. I like how complex those characters are.
I also think it’s neat how the show makes little creative changes, like switching the last name from one in the book to another name that could connect to a real criminal. That adds another layer to the story.
Overall “Lady in the Lake” gives you a sense of what 1960s Baltimore felt like, touching on prejudice, racism and women’s changing roles. Reviews say it thoughtfully portrays the main characters while departing some from the novel. By blending true events with fictional plotlines, this drama makes you think about issues of race, gender and justice that still matter today. It’s definitely worth checking out!
