The future of Doctor Who was a hot topic of discussion at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Showrunner Russell T Davies gave fans some interesting insights into where the iconic British sci-fi show is headed creatively now that he’s back in charge.
Davies confirmed that those fun fourth wall breaks we saw in season 14 will stick around. “I think breaking the fourth wall is just part of the Doctor Who experience now,” he said. While past Doctors like Tom Baker have waved to the audience before, Davies has really leaned into it this season. Almost every episode featured a moment where a character acknowledges that they’re in a TV show.
When asked why he keeps having the characters poke their heads out of the screen, Davies played coy. “I’m just having a good time with the format,” he said with a smile. But between the lines, it seems like these moments might lead to an even bigger meta story down the road. Only time will tell!
Davies also teased that season 15 will have “more music,” including a full-on song episode. But he was quick to note it’s not Transforming into a Broadway musical or anything.
The panel also talked about Ncuti Gatwa’s future as the 15th Doctor. Even though he just took over, rumors are already swirling about how long he’ll stick around. But Davies isn’t making any promises yet. “We’re loving making more episodes, but it’s too early to plan that far ahead,” he said cryptically.
With Disney+ now distributing the show globally, that international deal could impact Gatwa’s tenure too. Fans are hoping he sticks it out for at least three seasons like recent Doctors. But as always with this timey-wimey show, the future is in constant flux! Overall though, it seems like Doctor Who is in good hands with Davies steering the TARDIS once more.
