Traveling to faraway lands and embarking on magical adventures is a staple of video games. But sometimes it’s nice when the adventure comes to you instead. With Dungeons of Hinterberg, up-and-coming studio Microbird Games has crafted a cozy RPG where mystery arrives directly on your doorstep.
You play Luisa, a burnt-out lawyer from Vienna who books a trip to the sleepy mountain town of Hinterberg for some much-needed rest and relaxation. But little does she know that some real magic is about to shake things up. Strange happenings have begun emerging all across the town’s scenic landscape—areas warping reality, spawning fantastical monsters, and reshaping themselves into sprawling puzzle dungeons.
It doesn’t take long for the local tourism board to cotton on. Before you know it, Hinterberg has branded itself as the premier destination for “Dungeon Crawlers,” intrepid adventurers who strap on their gear to delve into the magical anomalies infesting the countryside. Luisa finds herself swept up in the frenzy, spending her days exploring new regions, learning elemental sorcery, and tackling treacherous trials.
Yet beneath the surface, all is not as cheerful as the promotional brochures make it seem. As Luisa befriends the locals and unravels the mysteries surrounding these “Dungeons,” she discovers that the magical boomtown conceals darker forces that threaten to destroy the peace of Hinterberg. It’s up to her to use her growing abilities to save the town from the dangers it has unwittingly courted.
An Eclectic Cast of Townsfolk to Befriend
I have to admit, when I first started playing Dungeons of Hinterberg, I was skeptical about how compelling its story and characters could be. After all, it’s a dungeon crawler at its core—how deep could the narrative possibly get underneath all that monster-slaying? But Microbird Games has proven me deliciously wrong with a cast of eccentric adventurers, each on their own soul-searching journey, that managed to suck me in just as much as the clever puzzles and tight combat.
Protagonist Luisa starts off as a pretty typical vessel for the player—a burnt-out lawyer in need of an escape. But she quickly becomes much more than that, as we see her bounce off the eclectic crew inhabiting this picturesque little Austrian town.
There’s Alex, her cheery yet determined guide who’s on a quest to document every dungeon; Klaus, a gruff but kind-hearted trainer whose tough demeanor masks a hidden pain; and Renaud, the enigmatic dungeon elite whose ominous facade hints at dark secrets out in the frigid wastes of Kolmstein.
Each character gets just enough screen time for us to get a feel for their personality without overstaying their welcome. But between the lines, their stories become richer and more nuanced the more you pry. Despite the brevity, I felt truly invested in seeing where each adventurer’s path would lead.
The way they dynamically interact based on your actions each day is just a chef’s kiss. By peeling back the layers, many reveal greater purposes that intersect with the game’s larger themes of trauma, ambition, and learning to accept change.
If I have one minor complaint, it’s that not all their cases are given a satisfactory resolution. There’s certainly potential for interesting developments left dangling by the finale. But on the whole, the characters breathe such life and local color into Hinterberg that it left me far more eager to return than I expected. Microbird Games may have stealthily crafted one of the most charming casts in recent memory and totally changed my outlook on what storype can achieve within this genre.
The Majesty of Mechanics
There are few games crafted with as deft a balance of both substance and style as Dungeons of Hinterberg. Developer Microbird Games has imbued this work with a gameplay loop that, much like Luisa’s own adventure, unfolds at a charming, unrushed pace. Each sunrise provides an opportunity for discovery that is met with relaxation and community as daylight wanes.
The regional separation of magical abilities is a masterstroke, preventing powers from overlapping while encouraging constant experimentation. Zipping across snowfields on the Kolmstein hoverboard before slicing loose an icy ramp with the laser feels as liberating as whisking through autumnal forests does on the winds of Hinterwald. Combat obtains just enough nuance from skills and stat-buffing charms without overcomplicating—a knife’s edge that makes clashes thrilling without friction.
Progression evolves at an organic rate, unfolding through activity rather than arbitrary tasks. Time invested with intriguing townsfolk yields growth more memorable than menus alone. Tooling Luisa via intimate character vignettes as opposed to abstract lists imbues her development with heart. Despite rigidity in time allotment, days never feel constrained—just full.
This is a game made out of appreciation for its medium rather than exploitation of the latest trends. Mechanics serve story and experience, never vice versa, letting Hinterberg’s charm ebb and flow without seams. While technical brilliance is not absent, its subtler skills shine through, forging fun that feels full yet never forced. Microbird Games’ mastery lies not in reinventing the wheel but in polishing the proverbial gem until its edges gleam.
Exploration and Ingenuity
The developers at Microbird Games have crafted a game world that begs to be explored around every one of Hinterberg’s idyllic corners. Each region of the village feels handcrafted, brimming with personality and laden with well-hidden secrets. It’s easy to while away hours simply wandering the maps, soaking in the beautiful scenery.
Hinterwald Forest, for example, always left me feeling serene yet curious. Sun-dappled trails weave amongst the colorful foliage, every shade of orange, red, and yellow. But those picturesque forests also cleverly conceal nail-biting platforming challenges, with mist creeping between the treetops to disorient wanderers. I lost count of how many heart-pounding leaps of faith I made from those branches, wind magic in hand.
Things get appropriately dicey atop Kolmstein’s snow-capped peaks as well. Icicles dot crags like daggers, while wickedly sharp stalactites hang precariously above bottomless crevasses. Threading the needle on this frigid mountaintop takes nerves of steel, though gliding across it on a laser-guided hoverboard provides equal parts adrenaline and beauty.
Each region truly feels like a unique world unto itself. But it’s their clever marriage of landscape and lore-inspired puzzles that I admire most. Tucking narrative clues and environmental storytelling into each nook and cranny shows immense care and ingenuity. Puzzles flow naturally from the terrain too, rarely feeling forced.
Bosses could stand to offer a bit more of a thrill, though their gruesome designs remain visually striking. Overall, exploring Hinterberg and deciphering its secrets through creative problem-solving proved deeply satisfying, a true testament to Microbird’s passion and care for level design. Beauty remains their greatest asset here, in both scenery and ingenious puzzles alike. I confidently expect future dive spots to dazzle with equal artistry.
Friendly Faces in Hinterberg
While exploring Luisa’s latest magical destination, which offered wonder and intrigue during the day, I found myself consistently anticipating what new evening delights awaited back in town. This laidback RPG sharply understands that meaningful relationships are what bring the real magic to any tale.
Each night saw me eagerly conversing with Hinterberg’s colorful cast of characters. Some townsfolk were quick to befriend, like kindhearted Alex, who never tired of trading monster-slaying stories by the fire. Others proved more prickly. I smirked, imagining salty spell smith Klaus softening beneath his gruff facade. Unlocking new powers and perks came secondary to learning these people’s hearts.
Microbird has a real eye for the quirky details that flesh out fantasies. Downtime found me treating a mayor’s malaise with mountain air or debating modern art with an inventor. Smiles crept as my bonds deepened and roles reversed, with townsfolk now aiding Luisa’s wellbeing. Nightly choices felt impactful rather than transactional; I genuinely cared how days made each resident feel.
While certain mechanical rigidity keeps roleplaying simplistic, the heart poured into Hinterberg’s citizens more than compensates. I left longing to reconnect down the line, proving how a good yarn is a shared one. Quality time with quest givers proved as vital to this journey as any puzzle or prize. Microbird reminds us all that life’s greatest magic lies in bringing cheer to another’s day.
World and Atmosphere
Hinterberg is nothing short of breathtaking. From its rustic Alpine villages nestled between towering snow-capped peaks to its dense primeval forests and sprawling haunted swamplands, every inch of the landscape feels lush and alive. It’s a masterclass in environmental storytelling.
Microbird pulled no punches in crafting a world I wanted to get lost in. Every region pulses with a soul of its own, brought to life through lived-in townspeople going about their daily routines and picturesque vistas that begged to be screenshotted. Whether I was grinding treetops on my hoverboard in Kolmstein’s old-growth woods or tombstoning off snowy cliffs into moonlit valleys, I couldn’t help but marvel at the craft on display.
Mood, too, plays a huge role. The warmth and camaraderie among slayers around evening campfires brilliantly contrast the lonelier atmospherics of dungeon delving. And man, what dungeons they are—each one dialed to the nines. From oppressive fog banks and amber-lit caves to gargoyle-filled citadels perched high in the treeline, uncovering their secrets truly felt like unearthing pieces of a much larger whole.
It helps that Hinterberg is presented with a light touch. There’s ample opportunity to stop and smell the lederhosen without holding your hand. And boy, is it charming! Towns burst with quirky locals just begging to befriend, like Manfred, the reclusive inventor, or Greta and her wolf pups. Their stories flesh out this enchanting world even further.
In the end, world-building this rich is what great escapism is all about. Hinterberg offered up a return ticket, which I was all too happy to extend. I have a feeling I’ll be back again for many slayings to come.
Hinterberg Beckons You Back for More Adventure and Relaxation
Dungeons of Hinterberg proves to be a swell lil’ gem of an adventure. While it ain’t the most mechanically complex RPG out there and combat could have used some zip, what it lacks in crunch it makes up for in its charming presentations.
The folks at Microbird Games sure know how to make a world feel alive. From the luscious vistas of each region to the quirky residents of Hinterberg, I was constantly eager to see what was just over the next hill. It helped that I liked hangin’ with the gang too—rarely did I find myself pressured to power through eventide activities for the sole sake of min-maxin’. Nah, these peeps were just too darn pleasant to chat with.
And although puzzles never gave me more than a moment’s pause, their designs felt refreshingly handcrafted compared to the cookie-cutter mazes of others. Even without an overabundance of brain-busters, each dungeon explored brought a tidy sense of discovery I couldn’t help but appreciate. A relaxing adventure is what this game sets out to provide, so in the relaxation department, it most certainly delivers in spades.
Doesn’t mean it ain’t got room for improvement, mind you? In addition to jazzin’ up combat, I’d’ve liked to see stats and gear feel more impactful on gameplay. And while boss designs looked cool, their simplistic patterns made for anticlimactic finales. Microbird’s clearly got an eye for charming world-buildin’, though, so with sharpened systems, I trust they could elevate an already swell concept.
In the end, sometimes you just want an adventure that lets your worries drift away like a dandelion in the breeze. The Dungeons of Hinterberg offer that in spades, surroundin’ you with beauty both scenic and interpersonal. It may lack luster in technical aspects, but as a holiday of sorts for the heart, this one hits the spot.
