From comic book extravaganzas to intimate indies, a wide variety of films found success at the box office this weekend. Deadpool & Wolverine continued breaking records with a global haul surpassing $630 million, while Longlegs impressed critics and audiences with its unnerving atmosphere.
Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in their first superhero team-up, crossed another milestone with its international total now over $332 million. Domestically, it became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever with $298.4 million to date. Jackman congratulated Reynolds on Instagram for their collaboration’s “phenomenal” response.
Another smash was Inside Out 2, which has now earned over $1 billion worldwide – a first for 2022. Pixar’s heartwarming sequel about the emotions inside a girl’s head brought in $6.1 million on Friday for a projected $98 million second weekend total. With its humor and heart, Inside Out 2 looks poised to surpass Frozen II as the highest-grossing animated film.
Neon’s Longlegs also impressed in its debut, earning an estimated $20-23 million from its $10 million Friday figure. Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe star in director Osgood Perkins’ unnerving thriller about a mysterious disease. Early reviews praised its actors’ performances and Perkins’ deft manipulation of suspense.
Elsewhere, crowd-pleasers held strong like Despicable Me 4 with $44 million for Illumination and Universal, and A Quiet Place: Day One with $11.5 million in Paramount’s favor. Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum drew fans to Apple’s Fly Me to the Moon, taking fifth with $10 million.
