Josh Brolin will not play the role of Hal Jordan in the new HBO series about the Green Lantern comic book character. Producers formally offered Brolin the lead part in late August, but he declined the opportunity over the weekend.
The untitled series, set in the DC Universe, will focus on the relationship between Hal Jordan, an experienced Green Lantern, and John Stewart, one of the first Black comic superheroes. As Hal Jordan’s mentor, the actor would guide the younger Stewart as he assumes the power and responsibilities of being a Green Lantern.
Industry insiders say Brolin, known for roles in movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, carefully considered the TV project. However, he ultimately passed on the chance to portray Hal Jordan when production in Atlanta is scheduled to begin in January 2023. The creative forces behind the show, including writer-producers Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy, give it promise to bring new depth to the Green Lantern character.
With Brolin no longer being considered, producers must now look at other actors for the role. Matthew McConaughey’s name was mentioned, but sources say he likely won’t accept. Finding the right actors to capture Hal Jordan’s experience alongside John Stewart’s fresh outlook will be key as the mentorship dynamic drives the plot.
The Green Lantern series is planned for a 2026 debut on HBO. It aims to complement other DC films and shows under James Gunn’s expanding vision for connected stories. Hal Jordan may also cross over to the upcoming Superman movie where Nathan Fillion was cast as another Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. As casting continues, fans will watch to see who eventually puts on the power ring to lead this ambitious new chapter for the Green Lantern characters.
