Bill Lawrence, the showrunner for the Apple TV+ crime comedy series “Bad Monkey,” has outlined ambitious plans to continue the story if the streaming service approves a second season. The first season adapted Vince Vaughn’s character Andrew Yancy and the complex mystery from the 2013 Carl Hiaasen novel of the same name. Though the source material was exhausted, the season finale set up potential storylines for future episodes.
Lawrence, an experienced showrunner known for “Ted Lasso” and “Shrinking,” told reporters he wants to adapt Hiaasen’s 2016 sequel novel “Razor Girl” for season two. In the book, Yancy investigates a new case after the events of “Bad Monkey.” Lawrence said the mass departure of characters at the end of season one was intentional to introduce the characters from “Razor Girl” if the story continues.
While no formal renewal has been announced, Lawrence provided details about his vision. In interviews, he explained most main characters were written out because he “can’t really do a second season with the same characters” following the book’s plot. He aims to bring back Vaughn as Yancy paired with new faces and mysteries adapted from “Razor Girl.”
Lawrence also mentioned the potential for an original third season story if “Razor Girl” is adapted as season two. He joked about “pressuring” Hiaasen to write another Yancy book or adapting an older one. However, any continuation depends on Apple TV+ officially renewing the series.
The carefully crafted season one finale and Lawrence’s clear direction suggest the streaming service may be open to seeing Andrew Yancy’s story continue. Fans now await a renewal announcement and the possible return of Vaughn’s character paired with the intrigue of “Razor Girl.”
