The British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) announced nominations for the 2024 ceremony this week. Irish language comedy “Kneecap” earned the most nominations with 14. The film centers on a hip hop group in Belfast trying to preserve their native tongue.
Rose Glass’s “Love Lies Bleeding” followed close behind with 12 nominations. The psychological thriller stars Kristen Stewart and explores themes of obsession. Both films are nominated for best film alongside nine other nominees.
Saoirse Ronan picked up a best actress nomination for her role in “The Outrun.” The film adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s memoir tells a story of recovery on the Orkney Islands off Scotland’s northern coast. Ronan previously won a BIFA for her role in “Brooklyn” in 2015.
Other acting nominees include Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski for “Bird,” Jack O’Connell for “Back to Black,” Elliot Page for “Close to You,” and Alicia Vikander for “The Assessment.” The BIFA aims to recognize both emerging and established talent.
In addition to films, the nominations highlight excellence in craft categories like cinematography, editing, music and production design. Notable international independent films in contention are Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera.”
The ceremony is scheduled for December 8 in London. Last year, Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” received top honors. The winners reflect the variety and technical achievement of British independent films over the past year.
