The writers of Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer” have revealed a plot strategy that shocked viewers this season. They talked about how the character Eddie Rojas was carefully developed. They then tragically killed off to make the emotional effect stronger.
Eddie Rojas, played by Allyn Moriyon, quickly became a fan favorite in the show’s third season. He was Mickey Haller’s driver. In just five episodes, the writers created a character with a lot of depth who used to babysit Haller’s daughter, Hayley.
Co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez was honest about how they planned to do things. “We had five episodes to create a character that everybody fell in love with, and then we pulled the rug out from under them,” she shared. The group aimed to produce an important story moment that would connect with viewers.
The character’s death wasn’t just a chance part of the story; it was planned ahead of time. Ted Humphrey, who is also in charge of the show, talked about veteran director John Wells’ ideas about getting people emotionally involved. “When the kid dies, you should feel sad.” Humphrey said, “That’s how you know it worked.”
Eddie Rojas was based on Earl Briggs, another driver character with a similar end. Michael Connelly’s original books inspired him. However, the writers of the show changed the character to strengthen emotional ties.
Morrison stresses the character’s importance by saying that Eddie’s death leaves “a huge, huge scar on Mickey” and complicates the main character’s ongoing battle with guilt. The effect lasts all season and can even be seen in Mickey’s dreams.
The character’s death was also important for the story’s overall structure. It replaced a storyline about a drunk driver in the original books and explored themes of duty and consequences. Ultimately, the artistic choice made Mickey’s relationship with his daughter Hayley worse and then better.
As the series continues to stream, Eddie Rojas’s planned character arc shows how committed the show is to telling meaningful stories by showing how purposeful character growth can have a huge impact on viewers’ feelings.
