The Women and World International Film Festival will start in London in November. It will show powerful films about women’s experiences in global battles. On the first night of the festival, “Lee,” a biographical film starring Kate Winslet as famous war photographer Lee Miller, will be shown.
The film, about Miller’s groundbreaking work during the war, will be shown at the event from November 21st to 23rd. Antony Penrose, Miller’s son, director Kate Solomon, and screenwriter Marion Hume will be in a special talk after the movie.
Ksenia Bugrimova and Mariia Vynogradova, two Ukrainian filmmakers, started the event with a clear goal: “As a filmmaker from a war-torn country, I want to amplify women’s voices in film and media,” said Bugrimova. Because of her experience, the event is dedicated to telling the stories of women from war zones.
On the first night, there will be high-profile panel discussions with well-known people in the business. Actor Brian Cox, director Waad al-Kaateb, and General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, the ambassador of Ukraine to the U.K., will all speak. These talks will examine women’s important roles in armed battles throughout history.
The festival’s competitive program will include documentaries and feature pictures from places like Ukraine, Syria, and Afghanistan. One of the best parts will be the U.K. screening of “Porcelain War,” which just won praise at Sundance 2024.
As Vynogradova, one of the festival’s founders, put it, “The arrow a woman holds in her teeth represents her extraordinary strength, while her tears reflect the softness of her heart.” The festival is backed by the governments of Ukraine and the Czech Republic in London.
By showing these strong stories, the Women and World International Film Festival hopes to bring attention to women’s struggles in some of the world’s toughest places.
