Sony’s superhero sequel “Venom: The Last Dance” continues to rule the American box office, taking in $16.2 million in its third weekend, even though two new movies came out simultaneously. The Tom Hardy-led movie has now hit a big milestone: it’s the seventeenth movie in 2024 to make more than $100 million in ticket sales in the United States.
The movie has made $114.8 million in 17 days in cinemas in the United States. However, this result isn’t as good as previous franchise entries, which usually reached the same numbers much faster. The first two “Venom” movies made $100 million in just eight days, but this has taken almost twice as long.
There was also an interesting race for second place this past weekend between two new sets. It was a close call between “Heretic” by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” about faith. The religion movie cost $11.1 million, and “Heretic” cost $11 million. This shows how many different kinds of movies are trying to get people’s attention.
The movie hasn’t done very well in the United States, but it’s been a big hit in other countries. “Venom: The Last Dance” has made $394.2 million worldwide, including $279.4 million from overseas markets. This foreign performance is similar to the first “Venom” movie, which came out in 2018 and made about 70% of its money from overseas sales.
The movie’s continued success at the box office is partly because it has no big blockbusters to compete with it. This might change when “Red One,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, emerges. The movie did better than other 2024 openers like “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” ($113.4 million) and “IF” ($111.1 million), even though it was down 37% from the previous weekend.
“Venom: The Last Dance” recently passed “Twisters” ($369.7 million) to become the thirteenth highest-grossing foreign release of 2024. This shows how popular it is worldwide in a competitive film market.
