Carlos Saldanha, an Oscar-nominated animator who has directed classics such as “Rio” and “Ice Age,” is sponsoring the Colombian animated short film “La Perra.” As an executive producer, Saldanha brings his expertise to this rising Latin American movie that is gaining traction at international film festivals.
Carla Melo Gampert’s film “La Perra” is a highly personal drama about a young lady managing her sexuality and cultural expectations in Bogotá. The film’s title, which translates as “The Bitch” in English, criticizes the labels that are sometimes bestowed on Latina women who challenge established positions.
Saldanha was enthusiastic about the initiative, saying, “There’s something invigorating about witnessing a new wave of talent emerging with such force and vitality.” He commended Melo’s work, describing it as a “visually striking narrative infused with an erotic sensibility that is both visceral and delicate.”
The short has gained critical acclaim, including screenings at festivals such as Cannes, Annecy, Toronto, and SXSW. It has received numerous honours, including the Colombian Academy Macondo Award for best animated short, demonstrating its artistic and cultural relevance.
Produced by Evidencia Films and June Films, “La Perra” delves into concerns about female liberty and cultural expectations. Drawing on Melo’s personal experiences, the film depicts a young woman’s journey as she leaves her family home, challenging clichés about Latina women shifting from “cute little girls” to “traditional mothers.”
Saldanha is joined in support of the film by Rhiza Films’ Brazilian producers Claudia Chakmati and Gabriela Matarazzo, underscoring the project’s collaborative spirit throughout Latin America.
