In a surprising turn for Japan’s film industry, the highest-grossing cinema release of 2025 so far is not a feature film but a re-edited compilation of episodes from an upcoming TV series. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- has made an impressive impact, earning over ¥2.5 billion ($16.5 million) after just five weeks in theaters, with 1.55 million admissions, according to Cinema Ranking Tsushin.
The 81-minute compilation, which premiered on January 17, serves as a precursor to a full TV series that is set to air on Nippon Television in April. Directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, -Beginning- follows the story of a high-school student living on a space colony who becomes involved in an illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle after meeting a war refugee. The film has resonated strongly with audiences, securing the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend with nearly ¥600 million ($4 million) and continuing to perform well in its subsequent weeks.
Distributed by Toho and Bandai Namco Filmworks, the film marks the first major collaboration between Studio Khara, best known for the Evangelion series, and Sunrise, the iconic animation studio behind the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. This collaboration has brought a fresh energy to the beloved mecha series, with the Gundam universe being expanded in new directions while maintaining connections to the original 1979 series.
Despite being a compilation of TV episodes, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- has surpassed expectations. It currently ranks as the second-highest grossing Gundam cinema release of all time, trailing only Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom, which earned ¥5.38 billion ($35.4 million) following its release in January 2024. While other major titles like Cells At Work! and Moana 2 lead the overall box office for the year, these films were released in late 2024, meaning that GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- has claimed the top spot for the early months of 2025.
The film’s success is part of a broader trend in Japan, where anime television episodes have found new life in cinemas. This pattern was also seen in 2024 with the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba cinematic preview of its fourth season, To The Hashira Training, which earned ¥2.31 billion ($15.2 million).
The success of GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- further confirms the growing trend of anime content being packaged for theatrical releases, offering fans a chance to experience the stories on the big screen before they officially air on television.
Fans in the U.S. will have the opportunity to see Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- when it is released by GKids on February 28, with several other territories across Asia also set to release the film in theaters.
