In the first half of 2025 India’s theatrical box‑office grossed an estimated ₹5,723 crore ($664 million), a 14 percent jump on the same period last year and the market’s strongest mid‑year showing since the pandemic. Close to a tenth of that income came from “Chhaava,” the Vicky Kaushal‑led historical epic that has collected ₹594.9 crore domestically in 48 days and will reach streaming audiences next week. Trade trackers put its worldwide haul near ₹808 crore, making it the highest‑grossing Indian release of 2025 so far.
Industry analysts point to a broader lift rather than a single breakout. Six local titles—among them action sequel “Raid 2,” comedy tent‑pole “Housefull 5” and Aamir Khan’s drama “Sitaare Zameen Par”—have already crossed the ₹100 crore threshold, double last year’s count at the same stage. Hollywood imports such as “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” added roughly ₹320 crore to the half‑year total, underscoring the renewed appetite for event cinema across languages.
Raw grosses, however, tell only part of the story. The ₹7 crore Tamil comedy “Tourist Family” has posted a 1,200 percent return on investment, outshining big‑ticket releases on the profitability chart. At the other end, pricey star vehicles like “Sikandar” are struggling to break even despite headline numbers above ₹300 crore. Analyst Girish Wankhede argues that audiences are “rewarding freshness across genres,” noting that regional cinema and mid‑budget films together contributed more than 40 percent of nationwide earnings.
The buoyancy has not silenced familiar flashpoints. Trade veteran Komal Nahta sparred with social‑media users over alleged inflation of certain holiday‑weekend totals, reviving debate about ticket‑blocking and unverifiable reporting. Even so, exhibition owners say footfall is up 18 percent year‑on‑year, and advance bookings for the July slate—which includes “Jawan 2” and sci‑fi thriller “Gravity Zero”—suggest momentum could carry through to record full‑year revenue.
