Taylor Russell has exited Michael B. Jordan’s re‑imagining of The Thomas Crown Affair barely two weeks into principal photography in London, a move attributed by multiple insiders to “creative differences.” Amazon MGM Studios, which is backing the romantic heist thriller, is pressing ahead with filming while it searches for a new female lead to star opposite Jordan.
Cameras began rolling on 7 July at Elstree Studios before shifting to central‑London locations. Russell had been playing the insurance investigator who pursues—and is eventually drawn to—the titular billionaire art thief, a part originated by Faye Dunaway in 1968 and revived by Rene Russo in 1999. Her departure requires reshoots of material already captured, although production sources say the calendar remains “largely intact.”
Jordan, coming off his directing debut on Creed III, is both helming and starring in the picture from a screenplay by Drew Pearce. The ensemble still features Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk and Aiysha Hart, with original screenwriter Alan Trustman aboard as executive producer. Studio records list veteran producer Charles Roven alongside Jordan’s Outlier Society.
Amazon MGM has staked out 5 March 2027 for a domestic theatrical and IMAX rollout and insists the slot is unchanged despite the casting shake‑up. Industry consultants estimate that recasting mid‑shoot could add $5–7 million to the budget, yet they note the heist property remains a high‑profile cornerstone of Amazon’s strategy to refresh MGM library titles for global cinemas.
Russell’s schedule remains crowded: she is circling a Single White Female remake at 3000 Pictures and will appear in Na Hong‑jin’s Korean thriller Hope, factors cited by observers as compounding the creative split. Casting agents report early interest from several A‑list actors, though representatives for Lily James and Jodie Comer declined comment on speculation linking them to the vacated role.
