Molly Shannon Tees Up With Will Ferrell in Netflix Golf Comedy

Molly Shannon has signed on to star opposite Will Ferrell in Netflix’s forthcoming ten-episode golf comedy, reuniting the longtime collaborators on screen for the first time in more than a decade. Ferrell will portray a legendary pro whose dominance is tested when a breakaway league upends the sport, a premise loosely modeled on the real-world PGA-LIV rivalry. Shannon’s character, Stacy, is described by the streamer as the blunt confidante who keeps the superstar’s ego in check.

The series—still officially untitled and known internally as Golf—was co-created by Ferrell, comedian Ramy Youssef, and writer Josh Rabinowitz, though Youssef, Rabinowitz, and producing partner Andy Campagna quietly exited last month amid creative differences. Executive production now rests with Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor for Gloria Sanchez Productions alongside Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue of T-Street; additional EPs include Chris Henchy, Harper Steele, David Gordon Green, and Andrew Guest.

Industry insiders say script revisions are underway to adjust for the shift behind the scenes, but Netflix still intends to begin principal photography in early 2026 on West Coast courses that once hosted PGA Tour events. The streamer is positioning the project as Ferrell’s first scripted television lead after decades of film success, underscoring a growing appetite for sports-centric comedies following the global popularity of Ted Lasso.

Shannon and Ferrell rose to fame together on Saturday Night Live in the mid-1990s and later paired in features such as Superstar and Talladega Nights, a shared history producers hope will translate into the kind of improvisational chemistry that powered their parody broadcasts of the Rose Parade and a royal wedding. Both actors recently collaborated on Ferrell’s documentary Will & Harper, deepening what the comedian calls a “creative shorthand we fall back into without trying.”

Netflix has not announced a release window, but insiders expect the show to stream in late 2026, aligning it with a stretch of major golf events and giving the writers room time to sharpen its satire on the game’s money-driven culture.
