Two decades after redefining faith-based box office, filmmaker Mel Gibson has confirmed that his follow-up will unfold as two features: “The Resurrection of the Christ – Part I,” opening on Good Friday (March 26 2027), and “Part II,” arriving 40 days later on Ascension Day (May 6 2027). The calendar choice echoes the New Testament interval between Jesus’ resurrection and ascent, a detail marketers believe will energize Easter-season ticket sales.
Corporate filings list Lionsgate as domestic distributor, with Gibson’s Icon banner retaining international rights and production control. Cameras rolled this spring at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios and in southern Basilicata, with additional shoots pencilled for Morocco before year’s end. Returning cast members include Jim Caviezel, Monica Bellucci, Maia Morgenstern and Francesco De Vito, reprising roles first seen in 2004.
Caviezel told a faith-based outlet in April that he has “begun fasting and studying C. S. Lewis” to prepare for what he calls the most demanding portrayal of his career. Gibson, speaking in recent fan Q&As, said the screenplay shifts through multiple timelines and “other realms,” expanding well beyond the empty tomb.
Financially, the director is again relying on private backing, mirroring his self-funded approach to the original picture, which cost about $30 million and ultimately grossed more than $610 million worldwide. Faith leaders have broadly welcomed the sequel announcement, while some Jewish advocacy groups have renewed earlier concerns about potential stereotyping; Gibson has not addressed the criticism since the dates were revealed.
With production now past its halfway point, exhibitors anticipate strong pre-sales once holiday marketing begins, pointing to the first film’s enduring rank among the top R-rated earners in North America.
