As Netflix rolls toward the final chapter of Stranger Things on Dec. 31, the series has pulled a long-dangling thread back into the center of its endgame: Kali Prasad, aka “Eight,” played by Danish actor Linnea Berthelsen. The character returns in the back half of Season 5 after years off-screen, setting up a late-series collision between Eleven’s past and the forces still trying to control it.
Kali first entered the story in Season 2 as another Hawkins Lab test subject raised under Dr. Martin Brenner. While Eleven’s abilities bend objects and minds, Kali’s gift warps perception, pushing hallucinations and psychic manipulation. Her spotlight episode, “The Lost Sister,” sent Eleven away from Hawkins and into Kali’s orbit, a sharp detour that split the audience: some viewers welcomed the stylistic swerve, others saw it as a stall in the season’s momentum.
Season 5 brings her back with different stakes. The show places Kali in military custody and ties her directly to a new government effort that targets superpowered children. The reunion puts her on a collision course with Hopper, who has treated Eleven’s survival as a nonnegotiable mission, while Kali presses for an answer that protects future victims even if it demands brutal trade-offs.
The series’ creators have framed the move as a long-planned repair job. Matt Duffer told Entertainment Weekly that the team previously lacked a story reason to revisit Kali, yet her disappearance left “this loose end.” Berthelsen, speaking about Kali’s return, described a character shaken by being dragged back into the machinery that defined her childhood, calling the scene work “a really difficult conversation.”
Berthelsen, who was born in India, adopted, and raised in Denmark before training in England, has built a quiet résumé outside Stranger Things, including a recurring role on Alex Garland’s Devs. Now she’s back as the series heads into its final, feature-length farewell.
