Jack Black says The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is being built with devoted players in mind, while still aiming for the family audience that turned 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie into a blockbuster. Black returns as Bowser in the sequel, set for April 3, 2026.
Black said he is “sworn to secrecy” on plot specifics, then teased how the film treats the Wii-era favorite. “There’s tons of Easter eggs, and anyone who loves that universe will be very pleased with the way that it’s been brought to the big screen,” he said in a recent interview.
The pressure is real. The previous film earned about $1.36 billion worldwide, giving Universal a franchise anchor and raising the bar for any follow-up. Outside the box office, researchers who track franchise spillover argue screen adaptations can lift game engagement. A 2025 Bain & Company report found gamers spend around a quarter of their non-gaming media time on game-related IP and linked higher-acclaim adaptations with bigger user bumps for the underlying games.
Nintendo and Illumination unveiled an official trailer during a Nintendo Direct presentation in November and confirmed key additions to the voice cast: Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Returning voice actors include Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Black as Bowser. The trailer also flashes nods that echo later Mario titles, including Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Wonder.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, with Brian Tyler returning to compose the score. Universal will release the film worldwide; Japan is dated for April 24, 2026. With Galaxy’s space-setting as its hook, the creative challenge is familiar: reward players who know the games, and keep the story clear for newcomers.
