Netflix Returns to the ‘Parasyte’ Universe With New Series Led by Shioli Kutsuna

The follow-up to "Parasyte: The Grey" casts Shioli Kutsuna as the manga's shape-shifting antagonist Ryoko Tamiya, with a 2027 release planned.

Netflix is expanding its “Parasyte” franchise with a new Japanese-set series, “Parasyte: Tamiya,” reuniting the streamer with “Parasyte: The Grey” director Yeon Sang-ho and casting Japanese actress Shioli Kutsuna in the title role. The show, unveiled Thursday, is slated to premiere in 2027.

The series pulls its story from Hitoshi Iwaaki’s original manga, focusing on Ryoko Tamiya, a parasite that seizes control of a high school teacher’s body. Unlike the indiscriminately violent creatures that dominate much of the source material, Tamiya evolves.

Watching a parasite and its human host learn to share a single body pushes her toward a question the franchise has circled since its 1990s debut: whether her species might survive through coexistence rather than conquest. Kutsuna will play the role across three states, the unaltered human, the parasite immediately after taking over, and the hybrid being that gradually reconciles the two.

Yeon developed the project and co-wrote it with longtime collaborator Ryu Yong-jae, continuing a partnership that includes “Hellbound” and “Parasyte: The Grey,” the 2024 series that spent a month atop Netflix’s global non-English chart and reached number one in 34 countries. Directing duties fall to Kensaku Kakimoto, known for “Glass Heart,” and Kazuhiro Nakagawa, who directed “Double” and “Bullet Train Explosion.” Wowpoint, the production company behind “Parasyte: The Grey” and Yeon’s “Human Vapor,” is producing again.

Yeon described Tamiya as the figure who elevates Iwaaki’s manga past a straightforward action premise, pointing to her internal conflict over what parasites owe to survival and to the humans they inhabit. Kutsuna, whose credits include “Sanctuary,” “Deadpool 2” and the upcoming live-action “Gundam” film, called the part the most demanding of her career, saying the six months spent inhabiting Tamiya surfaced emotions she hadn’t confronted before.

Netflix has not released casting details beyond Kutsuna or specified an episode count. The series is already in post-production, according to the streamer, positioning “Tamiya” as the next chapter in a franchise that has moved from Japanese manga to anime, live-action film and, now, a second Netflix series built around a different corner of Iwaaki’s world.
