The Night Agent Kills Off a Mentor and Puts Peter on a New Path

Shawn Ryan says the finale’s partner tease is built to launch another season, even as Netflix has yet to announce a renewal.

Netflix’s spy thriller The Night Agent closed its third season by killing off key figures and setting up a new chapter for Gabriel Basso’s Peter Sutherland, as creator-showrunner Shawn Ryan said the series is already shaping story lanes for a potential Season 4.

Season 3, released Feb. 19, follows Peter as he tracks a Treasury analyst who flees with sensitive intel and stumbles into a conspiracy tied to shell companies, a crypto trail and a terrorist group. The season’s endgame centers on Walcott Capital, a shadow bank that bankrolls chaos while serving as a financial back channel for President Richard Hagan and First Lady Jenny Hagan’s campaign, according to Ryan’s account of the finale’s disclosures.

One of the season’s earliest shocks comes in Episode 2: Peter’s Night Action handler, Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warren), dies in a sting meant to flush out power broker Jacob Monroe, leaving Peter to operate without the mentor who trained him. Basso said the loss forces Peter to face how his choices “get people hurt,” sharpening his resolve to “do the right thing.” Ryan said the writers used Catherine’s death to strip away Peter’s remaining naivete and push him into carrying “the mantle” of her responsibilities.

Ryan has framed the season’s financial villainy as a pointed choice. He traced the idea of a shadow-bank antagonist to the Panama Papers era and said the show wanted to spotlight institutions that fail “their civic responsibilities.”

The finale also tees up Peter’s next assignment. A senior official hints he has a “candidate” for the partner Peter requested, which Ryan called a “launching pad” for another season. Netflix has not announced a formal Season 4 pickup, though reporting in recent days indicates a writers’ room opened in 2025 and scripts are already being developed.
