Eric Winter, who plays Officer Tim Bradford on ABC’s “The Rookie,” says the cast filmed a second version of the season eight finale last year because nobody on set knew whether the show would return for a ninth season. Winter shared the detail with reporters over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, telling them the crew wrapped without any guarantee of a future beyond what aired in May.
“We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back,” Winter said, adding that the alternate cut “would’ve been different” from what viewers saw. He declined to describe it, calling the specifics a spoiler.
The finale that did air left fans reeling. Moments after Tim proposed to fellow officer Lucy Chen, played by Melissa O’Neil, on a beach, the newly engaged pair were sedated and abducted by operatives tied to an international crime figure named Everett. Series creator Alexi Hawley told the Comic-Con crowd the twist prompted an outpouring from viewers, joking that many suffered a “conniption” watching it unfold.
ABC put the cancellation question to rest in April, renewing “The Rookie” for a ninth season months before the finale aired. The police procedural remains one of the network’s steadier performers, ranking among the top 15 entertainment series on television among adults 18-49. Winter called the renewal “an exciting time,” pointing to the rapport built over eight seasons with the ensemble cast.
That ensemble now includes a companion series, “The Rookie: North,” which will air alongside the flagship show when it returns in January as part of ABC’s midseason lineup — a pairing the network has said opens the door to crossovers between the two casts. Hawley has promised a supersized premiere to resolve the kidnapping cliffhanger, and Winter has floated one idea publicly: separating Tim and Lucy in different locations during their captivity to raise the stakes rather than letting them work as a team.
O’Neil has described the on-screen chemistry behind the Tim-and-Lucy pairing, known among fans as “Chenford,” as something that cannot be manufactured through writing alone. “The Rookie” also stars Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan and Lisseth Chavez.
