The Real Housewives of Rhode Island Review: Bravo Finds Drama in the Smallest State

Fifteen minutes between Cranston and Providence apparently qualifies as an expedition if Alicia Carmody’s aunts are making the trip. One arrives prepared with a flask. Within minutes, the family is interrogating Alicia about her nine-year engagement, and Bravo’s newest Housewives franchise has already established the geographic joke that makes Rhode Island such fertile territory: everybody is close enough to know your business, yet somehow far enough away to complain about visiting.

The Real Housewives of Rhode Island builds its first season around Alicia, Ashley Iaconetti, Jo-Ellen Tiberi, Kelsey Swanson, Liz McGraw, Rosie DiMare, and Rulla Nehme Pontarelli, with Real Housewives of New Jersey veteran Dolores Catania dropping into the group. The Jersey comparison is unavoidable. There are large Italian-American families, decades-old friendships, tangled romantic histories, and arguments where nobody needs a producer to explain why two people dislike each other.

That last point matters. Reality television can struggle when a cast clearly met during preproduction. Here, Alicia has known Liz since birth. Jo-Ellen’s romantic history reaches back to high school. Rosie arrives through overlapping friendships and a wonderfully Rhode Island connection involving Alicia’s former Botox provider. The cameras are entering an existing social ecosystem rather than manufacturing one.

Old Friends, Fresh Problems

The show’s best structural decision is letting those relationships reveal themselves through absurdly specific details. Liz, nicknamed Queen Elizabeth, owns a cannabis dispensary with her husband and discovered after marriage, through an ancestry website, that the two are related. Alicia’s mother casually announces that Liz has a serious fear of frogs. Nobody explains why. This is the kind of stray character information reality television desperately needs because no story producer could make it sound this naturally strange.

Jo-Ellen arrives carrying heavier history. She met Gary in high school, where her older sister Jen had already shown interest in him. Alicia hints that the timeline may be messier than Jo-Ellen admits. Before long, swinging rumors are circulating too.

Then there is Kelsey. Her older boyfriend spends roughly half the year in Miami, where he dates other women. Kelsey has accepted the arrangement for years, yet reaching 30 has changed what she wants from it. She wants greater commitment from a man who appears comfortable keeping things exactly as they are.

The series could treat that setup as cheap scandal. Instead, Kelsey’s discomfort gives the gossip some human weight. Her funniest scenes can still come from semantic warfare, especially when she rejects the word “polygamist” while acknowledging that both partners see other people. Rosie even researches the terminology and lands on polyamory. That is Housewives storytelling functioning efficiently. A relationship question becomes a social argument, then a vocabulary lesson nobody requested.

Nobody Came Here to Behave

Alicia may be the cast’s greatest source of accidental comedy. While explaining why she hates driving, she lists accidents, nearly being forced off a bridge, and running over a woman with the casual rhythm of somebody describing bad parking experiences. The producer immediately interrupts: what does she mean, she ran over a woman? Alicia simply confirms it.

The Real Housewives of Rhode Island Review

Later, she visits Kelsey carrying crackers without cheese because the cheese line was too long. Every good ensemble reality series needs somebody whose ordinary decisions become punchlines without that person visibly chasing the joke. Alicia has that gift.

Jo-Ellen brings a different skill. She knows she has a big mouth and seems perfectly comfortable demonstrating it. During Rosie’s beach picnic, Rosie begins probing into Kelsey’s relationship, hoping Jo-Ellen will supply information. Jo-Ellen initially refuses the bait. Their own feud soon takes over, with Rosie confronting Jo-Ellen about insulting her wine and saying children would dislike her. Jo-Ellen’s response is lethal because she barely bothers defending herself. She may not have said everything directly to Rosie, she admits, but she still believes it.

Rosie has useful reality-TV instincts too. A former local newscaster hosting a lifestyle program called Rhode Trippin, she approaches social gatherings like interviews where somebody forgot to establish off-limits topics. Her “Nosy Rosie” nickname proves accurate as soon as Kelsey’s relationship becomes available for investigation.

Ashley provides a quieter register. Scenes of her discussing the financial strain surrounding the coffee shop she shares with husband Jared, along with the exhaustion of taking greater responsibility for their children while he struggles emotionally, keep the series from becoming an uninterrupted rumor exchange. Her confessionals are sharper than her behavior in crowded rooms, which gives her presence a different rhythm from Jo-Ellen or Rosie.

The Rumor Economy

Jo-Ellen’s Fourth of July party demonstrates how quickly information moves through this cast. Kelsey learns that Rosie has questioned her relationship. Rosie argues that Jo-Ellen mentioned Kelsey’s problems first. Dolores quietly nudges people toward conversations, functioning like a veteran player watching rookies discover how dangerous passing information can become.

Rulla’s arrival raises the stakes further. Jo-Ellen found photographs suggesting Rulla’s husband Brian had been involved with another woman and passed the information through Liz before sending the images to Rulla. Rulla believes Jo-Ellen circulated private material. Jo-Ellen claims Rulla and Brian later contacted her workplace and HR seeking professional consequences.

At a vineyard lunch, merely learning that Rulla may appear visibly unsettles Jo-Ellen. Rulla eventually cancels through FaceTime, yet her absence creates nearly as much tension as her presence might have.

Kelsey then proposes the most dangerous sentence available in Housewives vocabulary: she has a game. Anonymous questions force the cast to address swinging, alleged affairs, romantic arrangements, and rumors about Liz having a male companion while her husband is away fishing.

Alicia asks Liz about that last rumor, arguing that giving her a chance to deny it is helpful. Liz understandably sees the situation differently. By episode two, the group already has enough unresolved history that an anonymous-question game feels less like an icebreaker and closer to throwing matches into a room full of gasoline.

The Real Housewives of Rhode Island premiered on Bravo on April 2, 2026, with streaming available on Peacock. The reality series follows a tight-knit circle of affluent women as they manage personal relationships, high-society events, and dramatic rivalries across the Ocean State.

The Review

The Real Housewives of Rhode Island

8.5 Score

The Real Housewives of Rhode Island understands that great reality television needs history behind the arguments. Alicia’s bizarre driving confession, Kelsey’s complicated relationship arrangement, Rosie’s relentless questioning, and Jo-Ellen’s talent for distributing information make the cast immediately legible without feeling manufactured. The Rhode Island social web gives every rumor somewhere to travel and someone to offend. Ashley’s quieter family and financial pressures add needed texture beside the louder feuds. Some conflicts flirt with territory that feels too invasive, yet this is an unusually confident Housewives debut with personalities capable of carrying a season.

PROS

  • Deep preexisting cast relationships
  • Immediately distinctive personalities
  • Naturally escalating gossip
  • Excellent comic unpredictability
  • Strong ensemble chemistry

CONS

  • Some invasive personal conflicts
  • Ashley initially feels peripheral
  • Dolores can feel strategically placed
